Book review of Web Copy that Sells by Maria Veloso

  Writing for the Web is considerably different from writing for offline media and therefore the skills required too are different. The book - Web Copy That Sells: The Revolutionary Formula for Creating Killer Copy Every Time makes a good attempt in teaching skills required for writing effective Web copy.     Written by a highly experienced Web copywriter, the concepts, lesson and tips are practical and contain the wisdom resulting from the author's several years of practice in both offline and online copywriting.     Written in an engaging style, this book by Maria Veloso takes her reader through the dynamics of selling on the Web.     The author first looks at the unique characteristics of the Web that makes selling to readers on the Web different from those who are, say, browsing a paper catalogue or reading a newspaper and follows it up with the process that she follows for writing Web copy. This is followed by a discussion on psychological motivators that are responsible for converting prospects into purchasers. A copywriter must know these motivating factors if they are to use these to his advantage. This is probably the most useful section for Internet marketing managers.     A discussion on details of crafting your copy is followed by a section on effective e-mail marketing.     The last two chapters wrap it all together. A few topics that are covered in these chapters include:
  1. keys to write an opt-in offer that is impossible to refuse;
  2. irresistible auto-responder e-mails; and
  3. guidelines for writing online ads, signature files and banner copy.
    Don't forget to read tips on traffic generation on PPC search engines on page 205.   This book contains some highly practical ideas on writing copy that can be followed to get better conversion from impressions to click-through and from click-through to desired action (sales, registration, opt-in or whatever you want your visitors to do).     This book is a must-read for Web copy-writers and copy-editors. Sales professionals (of Web related or new media products) will find that the knowledge they gain from reading this book will help them advise their clients better.
